drop of beauty oil

At L'OCCITANE, we show off the very best Provence has to offer, for glowing beauty that's unique. Every day, we commit to preserving the breathtaking natural environment that never ceases to amaze.

immortelle distillation

It all began in the markets of Provence. With nothing but an alembic, a small truck and a solid knowledge of plants, a 23-year-old named Olivier Baussan began distilling rosemary essential oil to sell locally. He expanded his production from oils to soaps to creams, taking inspiration from the land he grew up on to bring natural beauty to homes across the world.

L'OCCITANE works directly with over 130 French farmers and 10.000 pickers - from the immortelle fields of Corsica to the lavender fields of Provence - to ensure that the ingredients we use are of the highest quality and sourced as sustainably as possible.

Research & Innovation

The observation of nature guides our research, which is key for developing effective natural cosmetics. L'OCCITANE invests heavily in research - we have our own state-of-the-art research lab in the heart of Haute-Provence, in Manosque. A team of 100 researchers works in 11 laboratories, focused on topics from molecular biology to plant extraction to analytical chemistry so we can keep raising the bar.

Our Commitments

Our Commitments

Our global community is King, and we try to give back through our L'OCCITANE Foundation, created in 2006. Our two main initiatives support visual impairment around the world and economic emancipation for women in Burkina Faso. On top of that, our employees participate in Foundation projects, from post-tsunami reconstruction in Japan to natural heritage in Provence.

Experience for your senses

The Spa is a natural extension of L’OCCITANE brand: Thriving for authenticity, we always prefer hand-performed massages over technologies, and combine our emblematic ingredients from the Mediterranean with traditional massage therapies from all over the world. Today, our international network encompasses over 90 properties, from flagship Spas to “Petit Spas” connected to our stores, and iconic “Spa by L’OCCITANE” in exclusive 5* hotels with a soul. Each offers a distinctive brand experience for holistic well-being.

Animal Testing

The L’OCCITANE Group does not and has never tested its products, its active ingredients or its raw materials on animals at any point in the product development or manufacturing process.
The Group is fundamentally against animal testing of beauty products on a worldwide basis. In China, where our products are retailed, the local Chinese authorities request that some cosmetic products sold on the Chinese market are tested. They view it as the best way to safeguard consumer safety in China.
We do not conduct these tests. They are done by Chinese laboratories that have been approved by local authorities on a limited animal panel.
To move things forward, the cosmetics industry is developing its relationship with the Chinese authorities with the clear objective of bringing animal testing for beauty products to a definitive end. The industry has engaged with the relevant authorities and animal rights NGOs so as to highlight alternative techniques that are being used in Europe, where animal testing has now been banned.
This constructive dialogue has led to a series of advances in Chinese regulation, including a decision in June 2014 to end this type of testing on so-called “ordinary cosmetics” that are manufactured and packaged locally (shampoo, perfume etc.), as well as on imported hygiene products (soap, toothpaste etc.).
On November 11th 2016, the Chinese authorities announced the first alternative animal test (AAT) in cosmetic raw material, marking another major milestone. Currently, additional alternative tests are being developed by the NIFDC (National Institute for Food and Drug Control) and the L’OCCITANE Group is following these developments very closely.
We remain convinced that this open dialogue with the Chinese authorities will further influence Chinese regulation and put an end to animal testing once and for all.
Thank you for your interest and we hope this statement has clarified our position.
