Première Pression Provence: Olive Oil has Fine Vintages too

L’Occitane founder Olivier Baussan created Première Pression Provence in 2008 with the aim of sharing his delicious discoveries of rare olive oils and encounters with passionate producers…

Première Pression Provence is quite difficult to define: a dealer in small producer olive oil? A provençale grocery? A regional counter? Why choose… The only thing to keep in mind is inscribed on the stores’ metal signs: “Huile d’Olive de Provence – Surpasse Tout,” or “Olive Oil From Provence Beats Everything”. Olivier Baussan is in love with Provence and its symbol, the olive tree. He has crisscrossed the Mediterranean for L’Occitane, but he always returns back home, to the olives and the oil presses of his very first memories. The idea then grew to dedicate a place to olive oil from Provence, all the oils of Provence, with green, mature or black fruitiness.

Since France is the only Mediterranean country that recognizes matured black olives in its Protected Designation of Origin labels for Provence, the Baux Valley and Aix-en-Provence. At Première Pression Provence, the 36 olive producers are promoted, and the oils fussed over like Grand Cru wines, as France is a very small olive oil producer (3% of its domestic consumption, and 0.15% of world production), unlike Spain for example. You need to climb a ladder to pick the fruit from the tree, hence a cost often superior to that of neighboring countries.

The PPP headquarters were opened in Volx, in Haute-Provence, in the eco-museum L’Olivier, created in 2006 and dedicated to the living culture of this “gift of the Mediterranean” that is the olive tree. Today, no less than 15 Première Pression Provence stores have blossomed in Provence, Paris and Strasbourg. Alongside the different olive oil vintages, we find a tasty and sophisticated selection of groceries: tapenade, truffle flavored terrine, vinegars, sardines, and sweet delicacies… As well as a tremendous oil dispenser which allows you to fill your own recipients with oil, and even to assemble different ones to create your own recipe… Unique!
